{"id":78,"date":"2011-03-03T15:03:13","date_gmt":"2011-03-03T21:03:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.teamdesk.net\/blog\/2011\/03\/layout-jagged-edge\/"},"modified":"2015-10-26T14:01:05","modified_gmt":"2015-10-26T19:01:05","slug":"layout-jagged-edge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.teamdesk.net\/blog\/behind-the-scenes\/layout-jagged-edge\/","title":{"rendered":"Layout: Jagged Edge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today&#8217;s update brought minor visual improvements, but one big change.<\/p>\n<p>Over last couple of months we receive a number of questions alike &#8220;form&#8217;s buttons disappeared, what is happened?&#8221; Let&#8217;s see how <a href=\"http:\/\/www.teamdesk.net\">TeamDesk<\/a> laid out elements on the screen.<\/p>\n<p>Main part of the application&#8217;s UI was laid out as a table with one row and two cells: one to hold a sidebar and another to hold the content such as dashboards, views and forms.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is that table cell that holds the content accommodates its width to widest element contained; all contained elements accommodate their width to the width of the cell.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>As buttons are centered relatively to <em>content<\/em> and content is much wider than the <em>viewport<\/em>, buttons are rendered off the screen. Of course browser displays horizontal scrollbar, but it does not draw enough user attention.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamdesk.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/501.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-460 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.teamdesk.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/501.png\" alt=\"50,1\" width=\"500\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.teamdesk.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/501.png 500w, https:\/\/www.teamdesk.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/501-300x134.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now, we got rid of containing table and modified the layout to use <em>viewport&#8217;s<\/em> width if possible.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamdesk.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/502.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-462\" src=\"https:\/\/www.teamdesk.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/502.png\" alt=\"50,2\" width=\"500\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.teamdesk.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/502.png 500w, https:\/\/www.teamdesk.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/502-300x135.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Form&#8217;s title exceeding viewport width is now cropped. Buttons are centered relative to viewport. Form content and narrow tables are fit to viewport width. Wide tables\u2026 oh, let them overflow.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px 15px 0px 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: left; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.teamdesk.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/503.png\" alt=\"image\" width=\"181\" height=\"153\" align=\"left\" border=\"0\" \/>Due to this change there is subtle difference in sidebar&#8217;s layout. Long view names are now allowed to wrap to the next line. To help user distinguish between multi-line name and next view small circle is displayed before the name.
