General Properties

General Properties

Every column has general properties, such as the column’s name or display options. General properties are common to all columns.

Name
This property represents the column’s name. Please note that this field is required.

When a column name is changed, the system automatically updates all references to that column, such as references in formula columns, documents, and other places. Therefore, you do not need to update the column name manually in each place where it is used.

Notes
The Notes field can hold any developer’s comments that need to be kept for this column. The comments will be visible in Setup mode only.
Default/Calculate
This property represents the value displayed in a column by default. You can enter a default value manually or select one from a list. For Checkbox columns, you can select whether the checkbox is checked or unchecked by default. For User columns, the available options are None, Current User, and Specific User.

The Formula option allows you to specify a formula that calculates the column’s default value when a new record is created. The value is recalculated when the values of columns referenced by the formula are changed while editing the record.

If the formula references a Lookup or Summary column, the value is not recalculated automatically when changes in a related table affect the Lookup or Summary column.

Changing the Default/Calculate value does not affect existing stored column values.
